RSA in the News
RSA Canada had a record year in 2015, reporting a profit of $225 million on its underwriting efforts. The company’s combined operating ratio for 2015 was 91.7 percent, down from 98.6 percent the previous year. The combined operating ratio is how insurance companies measure the success of insurance operations. It compares revenue from premiums to amounts paid in settlements, so the lower the ratio, the greater the profit. This record performance came at a time when net revenue from premiums was down 4 percent over the year.
The company credited the strong performance to its efforts to improve underwriting and risk management and it was aided by no significant weather events boosting claims settlements. The wildfire damage to Fort McMurray, Alberta, in the spring of 2016 will likely have a major effect on results for all involved insurers for the year.
