Canada has some of the harshest winter driving conditions in the world. Canadian roads are known to turn particularly nasty during this time of the year. It has been found by many that all-season tires are not up to the task when it comes to driving in Canada during the winter. For this reason, winter tires have become a big business in Canada.

The winter tire market in Canada offers so many great choices, it’s hard to know which tire is best suited for your vehicle. Ideally, you will want to buy a winter tire that drives well on ice, in snow, and under extremely cold temperatures. Is the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 the solution to your winter problems? Find out in this Michelin X-Ice Xi3 review.

Here’s what we like about Michelin X-Ice Xi3

The Michelin X-Ice Xi3 is an all-around winter tire that seamlessly combines four innovative technologies in its tread block design. It uses a unique Cross Z siping technology, which offers excellent stability in wet conditions. The tire’s sidewall edge is a block design that offers excellent grip on ice and snow by digging into the surface. Michelin makes use of a rubber silica-based compound called FleX-Ice, which sticks and holds on to the ice and snow and provides superior braking compared to other winter tires.  Finally, you have what are called “micro pumps,” which absorb water and get rid of it in a highly efficient manner as the tire rotates.

The Michelin X-Ice Xi3 Technology

The Michelin X-Ice Xi3 is quite impressive when it comes to the technologies utilized by the design. It comes with a unique self-locking siping pattern which provides superior braking, has more tread blocks and at different angles, and comes with an interesting new feature called “caterpillar drive.”

15% Extra Tread Blocks

Michelin has increased the number of tread blocks and made them more compact with the X-Ice Xi3. The tread blocks on Michelin X-Ice Xi3 have more channels and grooves, which makes the tire much more efficient at getting rid of water and snow.

Cross Z Sipes

The Cross Z Sipe is an innovative new siping pattern that is made with a unique 3D, self-locking technology. The sipes are designed in a zig-zag biting edge pattern. The points of the pattern are offset deep into the tread, towards one side or the other. This ensures that the tread block does not flex more than it should, and protects the tire against the squishiness that one normally associates with snow tires.

Micro Pump Sipes

The Michelin X-Ice Xi3 comes with micro pump sipes, which are tiny holes in the tread that absorb water off the road and evacuate the water as the tire rotates. This ensures that the tires never get squishy, even in the wettest of conditions. Michelin has innovated slightly with the Micro Pump Sipes technology by setting the micro pumps only at the last part of the tread, which ensures that the water is evacuated only at a point at which the tread block offers maximum grip and flex.

The Bottom Line

weather

Michelin X-Ice Xi3 uses many innovative new tire technologies. The question is if the technologies used in X-Ice Xi3 actually work. We guarantee they do. Michelin X-Ice Xi3 delivers outstanding grip and responds well to all surfaces such as cold,  dry, wet, snowy and icy roads. It delivers an excellent linear acceleration and an outstanding lateral grip. There’s no question that Michelin has a winner with the X-Ice Xi3.
