GMC Model Factors that Lower Auto Insurance Costs

When vehicles demonstrate that they cost less to get back on the road after an insurance claim, insurance costs fall lower than similar vehicles costing more. It’s simple financial risk on the part of insurance companies. Good performance generates low-risk ratings, putting money back into the driver’s pocket.

Several GMC models have patterns favourable to low insurance costs. The Insurance Bureau of Canada collects claims information and compares all vehicles against industry averages. Where collision claims occur, GMC models showing positive performance across model years include the GMC Astro and Safari Wagon, the Blazer and Jimmy S-Series, the Colorado, S10/Sonoma, and Silverado. Each of these show multiple model years where the cost to repair vehicles came in under averages of all vehicles in the country. Because of this, insurance costs for these models are also better than average, meaning low rates for consumers.

Occupant protection reflects statistically in the incidence of accident benefits claims arising from personal injuries after collisions. GMC vehicles perform well in this regard, possibly due to the larger average size of the models as well as safety features designed to improve occupant protection.

No GMC vehicles perform below average for this category. Only a few model years show average performance, and these spread across models. Nearly all GMC vehicles came in above average for occupant protection based on accident benefits claims. This safe ride results in lower insurance costs, particularly in vehicles that already perform ahead of the curve in collision repair costs.

GMC Model Factors that Increase Auto Insurance Costs

The universally good personal injury performance isn’t shared across the collision and comprehensive categories for all models. While some vehicles, as noted above, do perform well, more than one-third of the GMC models reported by the IBC cost more to repair after collisions or incidents covered by comprehensive insurance.

For example, the GMC Silverado, while scoring better than average for collision claims for most model years doesn’t have the same advantage for comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive claims for the model frequently exceed 200 percent of the national average. Other models, including the Suburban, Yukon and Tahoe show high comprehensive claims costs as well. These models see higher insurance costs because of it.

While generally, GMC products perform well on accident claims, some model years fall below standards. The worst offenders are late model Equinox and Terrains, as well as some years of Silverado, Tahoe, Trailblazer and Colorado versions. Any positive gains in other years are tempered by these statistics.

Known Issues with GMC Vehicles

A major recall by airbag supplier Takata affects nearly all car manufacturers. GMC has affected models as well. Information on recalls for North American vehicles is found here, at the SaferCar.gov site. You can look up individual GMC vehicles by VIN to determine status under the Takata recall.

  • A Goodyear tire recall affects 2015 GMC Acadia SUVs.
  • 2009 to 2014 GMC Acadias have a front seatbelt cable issue.
  • 2008 to 2013 GMC Acadias also have a side airbag wiring harness problem.
  • 2015 GMC Canyon pickups have a front seat issue, resulting in a recall.
  • 2006 and 2007 GMC have a potential fire risk issue.
  • GMC Savana models using compressed natural gas as fuel are recalled for a potential leak problem. This involves models from 2011 to 2014.
  • The 2015 GMC Suburban is part of a recall due to rollaway risks.
  • 2015 GMC Sierra HD, Yukon, and Yukon XL models are recalled for warning system failures.

Tips for Finding the Lowest GMC Car Insurance Rates

As with any vehicle brand in Ontario, finding the best price on insurance for GMC trucks requires extensive comparison shopping. Fortunately, “extensive” no longer means “time-consuming” thanks to Ratelab’s car insurance calculator. Unlike other online resources that look only at one insurer’s rates, Ratelab has dozens of partners in the insurance industry. The Ratelab advantage shops your policy needs with over 40 insurance companies operating in Ontario. You’ll find not only the best match for coverage but also, the lowest estimates on the policy you want.

Though just searching through Ratelab can save you hundreds, that’s just the beginning. For example, most insurers offer a range of discounts not included in the short forms you fill out for the Ratelab search. With your already low-cost quote in hand, you can hunt for discounts offered by your pick of the insurers bidding for your business. Not every company offers the same discounts. The auto insurance market in Ontario is competitive, with each company seeking the plan that gives them the upper hand.

When you qualify for a discount, ask that it is applied to your policy. Insurers rarely add discounts automatically. The savvy shopper knows this and checks back with the company for new discounts and qualifying status. There’s no need to simply accept insurance price increases year after year. There are better plans out there.
