The Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter tire is made for Canada’s harsh winter environment. This review is honest and aims to deliver a real-world view from an experienced winter driver’s personal perspective.

Winter Conditions and the Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter Review

Winter conditions in Calgary reach a high of 15 degrees Celsius and low of -30 degrees Celsius. The average winter temperature is -10 degrees Celsius. The last winter was rather nasty and with ice sheets at 6 inches of snow on the road–every new ice drop formed a fresh coating of ice. The harsh weather around Calgary contributes to the low road quality and poor maintenance. Driving on the roads is not enjoyable with unavoidable potholes and ruts.

My driving to the Rocky Mountains is done in an hour where I join up for winter sports and explore the fresh scenery, so I am accustomed to Canadian winter driving conditions.

Initial Impressions of the Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter

snowy road

The design of the Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter comes across as a light truck tire, made for rough terrains and ruts. I saw this tire as a good fit for snow-filled, ice-packed roads. The Ultra Grip Winter tire was the invitation from my tire dealer, and I was initially hesitant because I was not a Goodyear fan. I used Goodyear Nordic the last three winters and was unimpressed. The Goodyear Nordic was a house re-brand designed for Canadian tire retailers.

Design Features of the Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter

  •  Three channels to displace water
  • Well-siped and directional tread blocks of 4 inner rows
  • 4-5 siped outer blocks with large groove block cuts that enhance lug flexibility, especially fitting for uneven surfaces and back roads that are rutted with ice tops
  • Stud mounting for winter across two outer blocks
  • Finger tight and pliable rubber compound that is good for winter grips but possibly bad for the longevity of the tire

With all these features I decided to try them out on my Wrangler Three and after the entire span of the winter, I have decided that the Goodyear Ultra Grip Winter is the winter tire for me. With these tires on my vehicle, I roll through snowy roads, grip iced surfaces and run through back roads filled with ice with ease.
