Our mission

RateLab.ca publishes educational content that helps Canadians understand insurance and personal finance topics, compare options, and ask better questions when shopping for coverage, credit products, or borrowing. Our goal is to make complex topics such as coverage types, discounts, policy wording, claims concepts, interest rates, fees, rewards programs, and pricing factors easier to understand so readers can make more informed decisions.

What RateLab.ca is (and isn’t)

  • RateLab.ca is an independent consumer information website. We are not an insurance company, insurance brokerage, lender, bank, credit card issuer, or claims service.
  • We do not sell insurance policies or financial products and we do not provide individualized insurance, mortgage, or financial advice.
  • Our content is general education and should not be treated as professional advice for your specific situation.

If you need advice tailored to your needs, speak with a licensed insurance professional in your province, or a qualified financial professional for mortgages and credit decisions.

How we create content

Our articles are produced using a consistent editorial workflow:

  1. Topic selection
We choose topics based on common questions Canadians ask (coverage basics, provincial rules, discounts, buying tips, renewal checklists, credit card basics, mortgage concepts, budgeting and borrowing decisions), seasonal issues, and changes that may affect consumers (product updates, regulatory guidance, or market developments).
  2. Research and sourcing
We research each topic using reputable sources such as:

    • Federal and provincial regulators and consumer guidance
    • Government resources related to insurance, borrowing, consumer rights, and complaints processes
    • Issuer, lender, insurer, and broker disclosures, terms, and official product documentation
    • Recognized industry organizations, standards bodies, and publications
    • Publicly available documentation and news from credible outlets (used carefully and cross-checked where possible)

When we reference statistics, premiums, rate ranges, interest rates, fees, or other figures, we aim to use traceable sources and explain what the number represents (who it applies to, the region, the timeframe, and the assumptions).

  3. Writing
    Our writers focus on:

    • Clear explanations in plain language
    • Practical steps readers can follow when comparing quotes, rates, or offers
    • Neutral, non-salesy framing (we do not claim one provider is best for everyone)
    • Distinguishing between required items and optional add-ons, and explaining common tradeoffs (deductibles, limits, endorsements, interest rates, fees, rewards terms, and eligibility)
  4. Review and quality checks
    Content is reviewed for:

    • Accuracy of definitions and terminology
    • Clarity and consumer relevance
    • Fair, balanced, and non-misleading framing
    • Clear separation between general education and individualized advice

Note: Where appropriate, we may consult or seek review input from qualified professionals (for example, licensed insurance professionals for insurance-specific topics). Review is focused on general accuracy and clarity and does not create a client relationship or replace advice from a professional who understands your personal circumstances.

  5. Updates
We periodically review and update content to keep it current. When changes are significant, we update the “Last updated” date and adjust content to reflect the newest available information.

Our approach to pricing, “average rates,” and comparisons

Pricing and eligibility can vary significantly depending on the product and your situation. For example:

  • Insurance can vary by driver profile, vehicle or property details, location, claims history, and coverage choices.
  • Mortgages and loans can vary by credit profile, income, debt ratios, down payment, property type, term, and lender criteria.
  • Credit cards can vary by approval criteria, promotions, fee structures, interest rates, and rewards terms.

Because of this, any price examples, “average” figures, or sample scenarios are context-dependent. When we include ranges or benchmark figures, we strive to:

  • Explain what the number is and what it is not
  • Avoid implying that a reader will receive that exact quote, rate, or offer
  • Encourage “apples-to-apples” comparison by standardizing key inputs (coverage limits and deductibles for insurance, term and amortization for mortgages, fees and rewards assumptions for credit cards)

Affiliate disclosure and how we make money

RateLab.ca may earn compensation when readers click partner links or use comparison tools on our site. This is sometimes called an affiliate commission.

To be clear:

  • Compensation helps fund our content, research, and site operations.
  • Compensation does not determine our editorial topics, conclusions, or rankings.
  • We aim to present information neutrally and encourage readers to compare options using consistent settings.

Where relevant, we disclose affiliate relationships on pages that include partner links.

Advertising and sponsored content

If we publish sponsored content, it will be clearly labeled as sponsored or advertising. Sponsored content does not change our editorial standards for accuracy and clarity.

Independence and objectivity

We aim to help readers compare providers and products fairly. We do not claim that one provider is best for everyone. When discussing insurers, lenders, issuers, or comparison tools, we focus on consumer-relevant factors such as:

  • Coverage options and common add-ons (for insurance)
  • Rates, fees, and key contract terms (for mortgages and credit products)
  • Eligibility rules and availability by province
  • Customer service considerations (where publicly documented)
  • Practical shopping tips and questions to ask

Accuracy corrections

We work hard to keep information accurate. If you believe something on RateLab.ca is incorrect or outdated, contact us and include:

  • The page URL
  • The specific statement you believe is incorrect
  • Any supporting documentation or source links

We review credible correction requests and update content when warranted.
